AME Faculty, Graduate Students Shine Through Honors and Recognition

AME faculty and graduate students continue to bring prestigious fellowships, awards, honors and recognition to the department. 

Victor Nguyen (aerospace engineering doctoral program - adviser: Olesya Zhupanska) was awarded the NASA Jenkins Fellowship in January 2017. The fellowship, funded by the NASA Glenn Research Center, was awarded for Nguyen’s work in high-voltage insulation materials and structures for electric propulsion. The award also provided him the opportunity to gain research experience on-site at NASA Glenn.

Arman Dabiri (mechanical engineering doctoral program - adviser: Eric Butcher) won the Publons 2017 Peer Review Award in Mathematics, which honors outstanding efforts in peer review across the world's mathematics journals. In addition, Dabiri and Butcher won the Best Student Paper Award in the ASME 2017 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences, or IDETC, Conference in Cleveland, Ohio, with the paper "Fractional Chebyshev Collocation Method for Solving Linear Fractional-Order Delay-Differential Equations." 

Shuyang Zhang (mechanical engineering doctoral program - adviser: Peiwen Li) received the Best Paper Award for ASME 2016 Power and Energy/14th Fuel Cell Science, Engineering and Technology Conference. The award was announced at the 2017 ASME Conference.

Jorge Martinez Dominguez (Master of Engineering - adviser: Jekan Thanga) received the Top Students Academic Achievement Award in Spain as one of the top master’s students for 2016-2017.

Graduate student Brason Holt (mechanical engineering doctoral program - adviser: Jeff Jacobs) was selected for the College of Engineering Graduate Scholarship. The scholarship provides a tuition waiver and $30,000 across the 2017-2018 school year and summer semester. 

Three graduate students were selected to receive the Theodor Troller Memorial Scholarship for 2017-2018: David Yaylali (Master of Aerospace Engineering - adviser: Eric Butcher), Ethan Burnett (Master of Aerospace Engineering - adviser: Eric Butcher), and Harshad Kalyankar (Master of Aerospace Engineering - adviser: Israel Wygnanski). The Troller Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship designated for graduate students in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Its namesake, Theodore Troller, was instrumental in developing the model block construction one-piece casting vaneaxial fan used in most commercial and military aircraft from 1946 to 1960.

Congratulations to three AME faculty members nominated by graduate students for the Annual Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Awards for Graduate Education: Cho Lik Chan, Edward J. Kerschen, and Peiwen Li. The award acknowledges faculty and professionals who excel in their teaching and mentoring of graduate and professional students.

S. Alex Craig was the recipient of a Young Investigator Award, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, for his work on “Secondary Instability of Hypersonic Crossflow Vortices.” The Young Investigator program aims to attract outstanding faculty members of universities, in their first or second full-time tenure-track appointment, to the Navy's research program, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers.
