AME Students Leave Big Impact at Design Day 2024
Aerospace students in the capstone program contributed to a variety of projects that won multiple awards at Design Day.
The 2024 Craig M. Berge Design Day featured exemplary work from AME students, resulting in big financial awards for student capstone projects.
Students had two semesters to design, prototype and test their projects to compete for $49,000 in prizes on April 29. The teams this year persevered through novel challenges and challenging setbacks to find solutions to some of society’s toughest problems.
“It’s about designing, prototyping, testing, failing, trying again, and leaning on your teammates. But ultimately, it’s about making the world a better place. I’m really proud of all our engineers, mentors and sponsors,” said David W. Hahn, Craig M. Berge Dean of the college, to open the award ceremony.
Team 24028's Rotating Detonation Engine Rocket Design and Launch won $1,000 for the Steve Larimore Award for Perseverance and Recovery, while Team 24044 received $1,000 for the Honeywell Award for Excellence in Aerospace Mechanical System Design on their project Wind Tunnel -- Launch Vehicle Aerodynamic Testing; Team 24054's CubeSat Centrifuge Terrarium earned the Honeywell Award for Excellence in Aerospace Electronic System Design for $1,000.
The Ana Needham Award for Best External Collaboration by a Single Discipline Team was also awarded to Team 24059 for their Development of a Lightweight Structural Rechargeable Battery for Electric Aircraft project, which came with $1,000.
