Modarres to Present 2016 Kececioglu Seminar
Mohammad Modarres, an expert in safety assessment and safety goal policy development in engineering systems, will present the 2016 Dimitri Kececioglu Memorial Lecture on Thursday, April 14, at 4 p.m. in AME S212. A reception will follow in the AME courtyard.
His lecture, "Frontiers in Risk and Reliability Research," will highlight present and promising research directions in the fields of reliability engineering and risk assessment.
Modarres currently holds the Nicole Y. Kim Eminent Professorship in the A.J. Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he also serves as director of the Center for Risk and Reliability.
His research interests include probabilistic risk assessment and management, uncertainty analysis, probabilistic physics of failure, and degradation and damage modeling of systems, structures and components.
Modarres has served as a consultant to several governmental agencies, private organizations and national laboratories. He has published more than 300 papers in archival journals and proceedings of conferences, five textbooks, two handbooks, and multiple edited books and book chapters in various areas of risk and reliability engineering and advised 41 PhD students and over 100 MS students. He is a University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and a fellow of the American Nuclear Society.
He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Tehran Polytechnic in Iran. He earned master's degrees in mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering, as well as a doctoral degree in nuclear engineering, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
About the Kececioglu Memorial Lecture Series
The Dimitri Kececioglu Memorial Lecture Series at the University of Arizona department of aerospace and mechanical engineering was established to recognize the lifetime achievement of the late professor Dimitri Kececioglu in the field of reliability.
A Fulbright scholar and pioneer in reliability engineering, Kececioglu taught in the University of Arizona department of aerospace and mechanical engineering for more than 40 years. Over the course of his storied career, he published more than 150 papers and authored eight books. He was a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society for Quality and an award-winning educator.
