Abstract: Latest development in Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Smart Manufacturing (SM) technologies brings brilliant opportunities for innovation in the defense industry. Due to its free-forming capability, additive technologies present a promising and unique chance for many defense manufacturers, breaking boundaries in design and innovation at the process, material, structure, and device levels. In this talk, Professor James Li, founding director of DoD I-DREAM4D Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing, will provide a review of research on Additive Manufacturing focusing on Multi-Elemental Laser Alloying and an update on his current work on Bioprinting for Regenerative Medicine. Funding opportunities from DoD Agencies will also be reviewed in his talk.
Bio: Dr. Jianzhi (James) Li received Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, in 2003. Currently, Dr. Li is a Professor of Manufacturing Engineering, and Olegario Vazquez Rana Endowed Fellow at The University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley. His professional experiences also include working as a product engineer in the automobile industry and serving as technical director in the information technology and logistics fields. His research has focused on additive manufacturing, laser material processing, optimization and sustainable manufacturing. His current research topics also include bioprinting for tissue regeneration and STEM education. He received grants from various sources including federal government agencies and industries. He is currently leading a grant from DoD Manufacturing Technology (MTech) Program with a goal to develop a national consortium (I-DREAM4D) to support research and education in Advanced Manufacturing for the defense. Some of his previous work has been published in journals such as CIRP Annals of Manufacturing Technology, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research, Nano Energy, Computer and Industrial Engineering, International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives, International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing, Journal of Materials Processing Technology, etc. He also served as a member of the editorial board for two international journals.
