Machine Shop
The AME Machine Shop is a state-of-the-art resource for student design and building. Located on the ground level of the AME N building, it’s an ideal space for senior design and club projects. The complex comprises four distinct work areas.
Research Shop
This high-tech area offers computer numerical control (CNC) and manual machining equipment, as well as welding and inspection capabilities. MasterCAM software is used for all programming.
Student Shop
This shop also contains CNC equipment, plus manual lathes and mills.
Composites Layup Room
The composites room contains down draft tables, vacuum evacuation systems and flammables storage cabinets.
Front Room
Students can use numerous benches and worktables, along with as well as a large CNC router.
CNC Equipment
Haas UMC 500
The Haas UMC 500 is capable of live fourth and fifth axis machining allowing complex parts production with minimal set ups, improving the accuracy of the finished parts. This CNC accommodates drill and tap, mill and contour at almost any angle, up to 5 sides of the part during a single set up.
Basic Information:
- 5-axis simultaneous machining
- Powerful inline direct-drive spindle
- Large capacity side-mount tool changer
- Includes wireless intuitive probing system
Haas ST35Y Lathe
This CNC lathe allows for traditional turning and boring, as well as threading, both internal and external. In addition, it allows for milling operations along both the Z-Axis and X-Axis for cutting slots and grooves, and other features as well. The machine is also WiFi equipped and has wireless file transfer capabilities.
Basic Information:
- 12-station base mount turret (BMT65)
- Big-bore spindle
- Y-axis milling, drilling, and tapping
- Medium footprint
Haas VF3SS YT
The large vertical machining center is capable of high-speed cutting operations. With the largest Y-travel on campus at 26”, it can handle jobs that other CNCs cannot. This is a traditional 3-Axis machine with capabilities that include milling, surfacing drilling and tapping.
Basic Information:
- High-speed spindle
- Fast rapids
- Super-speed side-mount tool changer
- More X- and Z-axis travel
Haas VF3SS YT specifications video and demonstration video
Mitsubishi MV1200S
The wire EDM can produce parts with the highest precision – greater than traditional CNC Mills and Lathes. The machine is equally capable of cutting internal and external features, as well as tapers and other features typically made on a 4-axis machine.
Basic Information:
- All fiber optic servo control (4X faster internal communication speed)
- Submerged machining to 8.7" deep
- Split axis construction (table moves in X, column moves in Y)
- Fully automatic rough machining control covers PM, CM-R and EM functions
Support/Manual Equipment
- Sharp variable speed manual milling machine
- Bridgeport variable speed manual milling machine
- Goodway 12x36 engine lathe
- Mori Seiki 12X50 engine lathe
- Do all vertical bandsaw
- Hyd-mech S20 horizontal bandsaw
Welding & Inspection
- Miller syncrowave 300 TIG welder
- Miller matic 200 MIG welder
- Lincoln 375 TIG welder
- Oxy acetylene tanks cut/weld/Braze
- Various cut-off saws
- Precision welding table
Measurement/Inspection Equipment
