U of A president joins US Department of Energy advisory committee
University of Arizona President and Distinguished Professor Suresh Garimella is one of 21 individuals representing universities, national laboratories, foundations and corporations on the newly established Office of Science Advisory Committee.
The U.S. Department of Energy recently appointed University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella to the Office of Science Advisory Committee, or SCAC. Garimella, who is also a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, is one of only two university presidents appointed to SCAC, a body that advises DOE’s Office of Science on scientific and technical matters.
"Serving the nation through engagement is central to the University of Arizona's land-grant mission, and it is something I have valued throughout my career," said Garimella. "I am honored to have been appointed to this advisory committee and look forward to this work at a critical moment for scientific and technological advancement in energy and related areas. My sincere thanks to Under Secretary Gil for the opportunity."
In this role, Garimella will use his experience and knowledge to help the Office of Science face the ever-changing realm of advanced, interdisciplinary research and scientific discovery. The 21 members of SCAC will provide guidance on high-priority Science Office initiatives like the Genesis Mission, fusion energy and quantum science.
